Plymouth State Takes Two from Bearcats Baseball (6-2, 8-7 in Extra Innings)

3/11/2006 7:16:33 PM

Plymouth State of New Hampshire swept a doubleheader from the Bearcats on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference battle played at City Line Park in Brooklyn.

The Panthers won 6-2 and 8-7 in extra innings to open their respective schedule with two wins, while the Bearcats drop to 2-2 overall on the young season.

Sophomore John Pogorzelski (Hillsborough, N.J.) keyed the Panthers in the opener with a pair of RBI, including one on a double. Senior C.J. Rousseau (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman Josh Labossiere (Lincoln, R.I.) also had RBI hits, and senior Adam Kobeski (Walpole, N.H.) knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Senior Alberto Nieves (Brooklyn, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) and sophomore Cesar Chaves (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) each batted 2-for-4 for the Bearcats.

Nieves had a two-run single in the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Panthers scored two more late in the game to seal the win.

In the nightcap, junior Steve Campo (Londonderry, N.H.) smacked a two-run homer in the third inning, and led off the eighth inning with a triple to score the game-winning run in the extra-inning 8-7 affair.

The Panthers built a 7-2 lead, but the Bearcats battled back to tie the game (7-7) in the seventh inning on a two-run single by sophomore Max Loehrke (New York, N.Y./Brooklyn Tech).

The team had a chance that inning with the bases loaded and two outs to clinch a comeback win in dramatic fashion, but could not get the winning run across the plate.

The Panthers took the win in the next inning with Campo's triple and run scored.

Arby Gega (Jamaica, N.Y./Hillcrest) and Charles Dantone (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) each batted 2-for-4, while emerging freshman Joseph Valentin (Co-op City, N.Y./Dewitt Clinton) reached base all five times he took to the plate. He had a single, double, home run, and reached base twice on errors.

The baseball team will return to action next Sunday, with a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY-Old Westbury. First pitch at SUNY-Farmingdale's neutral field will take place at Noon.
